AfD’s failure to deliver knock-out blow will ease pressure on Angela Merkel as Brexit nears

Angela Merkel will sleep a little easier tonight after her allies managed to pull off something of a last-minute escape in regional elections in eastern Germany.
While the nationalist Alternative for Germany party (AfD) managed to inflict losses on Mrs Merkel’s party and on her coalition partners, it failed to land a decisive blow against either.
That could ease the pressure that was threatening to plunge Mrs Merkel’s government into crisis just as the October 31 Brexit deadline looms.

The fact her Christian Democrat party (CDU) was able to hold onto the key state of Saxony will ease anxieties that Mrs Merkel’s chosen successor as party leader, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, is not up to the job….
