As seen on WWE Smackdown in Manchester, AJ Styles picked up a surprising win over Jinder Mahal to become the new WWE Champion. As a result of Styles’ Title win, the originally planned Brock Lesnar vs Jinder Mahal Champion vs Champion match at Survivor Series was changed to Lesnar vs AJ Styles.

According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, original WWE Survivor Series match plans called for John Cena to act as the special guest referee for Lesnar vs Mahal. Furthermore, Cena was scheduled to cost Mahal the match, setting up a WWE Title feud between Cena and Mahal on Smackdown Live.

With the PPV match now being Lesnar vs Styles, The Observer speculates it’s possible Jinder Mahal could cost AJ Styles the match, which could achieve two things – it would allow Styles to “save face” by not losing clean to Brock Lesnar, and it could set up the potential Styles vs Mahal rematch feud.

It’s also possible WWE could go in the opposite direction and have Mahal cost Brock Lesnar the match, setting up a possible Lesnar vs Mahal match at WWE Royal Rumble in January.
