Former referees’ chief Keith Hackett says ‘arrogant’ Mike Dean ‘overreacted’ by sending off West Brom boss Slaven Bilic vs Everton

The West Brom manager was protesting Kieran Gibbs’ dismissal at half-time only to be sent to the stands by the veteran official.

Gibbs was given his marching orders shortly before the break for pushing James Rodriguez in the face.

However, Bilic argued there was a foul on his defender by Rodriguez, which provoked the violent reaction.

Keith Hackett, who officiated matches in the Premier League and was later general manager of Professional Game Match Officials Limited, accused Dean of being arrogant at Goodison Park.

The ex-PGMOL chief told talkSPORT 2: “For me, Mike Dean has overreacted.

“I know the guy quite well and on this occasion, there was an element of arrogance. All he had to do was stop and manage the situation instead of trying to walk away from it.

“There was a manager who was upset, and managers do get upset, and part of the role of a referee is to try to control the individual and calm him down.

“Mike Dean was perfectly right in sending Gibbs off; Gibbs was stupid, that is a sending off offence.

“He [Dean] is on solid ground. All he has to say is say, ‘join me in the dressing room, come and have a chat, and I’ll explain to you fully why I’ve dismissed this player’.”

Dean was also criticised by former Aston Villa and England forward Gabby Agbonlahor.

The 33-year-old dubbed Dean an ‘arrogant fool’ in an extraordinary rant on talkSPORT.

He said: “Mike Dean is the most arrogant fool you will ever see… in not just refereeing but in life itself.

“I’ve never met anyone like him. You can ask any Premier League or ex-Premier League player that has played in a game with him as a referee. He’s the most arrogant person.
