This is according to former Arsenal player Adrian Clarke, who believes the only thing stopping the Gunners becoming Premier League heavyweights is the addition of new midfielders.

And those midfielders have been identified by Arteta who hopes to complete a double signing before the transfer window closes next week.

Houssem Aouar, the Lyon playmaker, and Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid are believed to be Arteta’s top targets for the remainder of the summer window, having already improved Arsenal’s defence with the signing of Gabriel and their attack with the arrival of Willian on a free transfer.

The Gunners have to sell some of their players to raise funds for the duo, however, as Partey has a £45million release clause and Aouar is valued at around £54m.

Whether these deals – both outgoing and incoming – can be completed before next Monday’s transfer deadline remains to be seen, but Clarke is confident backing Arteta in the market is all Arsenal need to challenge for the biggest honours.
